Things you did not know about Romania

The Romanian language is one of the five major romance languages (occasionally called Latin languages — the group of modern languages that evolved from spoken Latin between the sixth and ninth centuries A.D.), along with French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.

Romance languages by number of native speakers are Spanish (410 million), Portuguese (216 million), French (75 million), Italian (60 million), and Romanian (25 million) – according to Nationalencyklopedin. Furthermore it 1,700 years old.

 

 

The modern jet engine was invented by the Bucharest-born
inventor Henri Coanda in 1910. The unusual aircraft attracted attention at the Second International Aeronautical Exhibition in Paris in October 1910, being the only exhibit without a propeller.

Romanian inventor Traian Vuia was the first European to build and fly a fully self-propelled airplane in March 18, 1906.

He was the first to demonstrate that a flying apparatus could rise into the air by running upon wheels upon an ordinary road. Vuia also designed helicopters.

 

 

The first ever first perfect 10 in the Olympic Games was given to Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci. She did this after her performance in Montreal, Canada in 1976.

Such a score had never before been achieved at the Olympics. The scoreboard was not designed for double figures and the organisers instead had to display her score as 1.00

In 2000 Comăneci was named as one of the Athletes of the Century by the Laureus World Sports Academy.
